6 Scary ‘Tricks’ to avoid with RPA implementation

  • Not being able to automate an entire process end-to-end. It seems that RPA solution can move data from one place to another. It simply automates part of process, a task really.

  • Not being able to use all your data to automate a process. Upon inspection, you realise that data that should have been digitised was left out of the automation process. The OCR (Optical Character Recognition) technology worked fine for structured data, but there’s lots more unstructured data that needs to be included, such as handwritten notes, images and forms.

  • Machine Learning didn’t handle exceptions that you have. Now you have countless training manuals, documents and lack the infrastructure needed to handle it.

  • Lack of integration across technologies. You were assured that all these automation technologies would integrate not only with each other, but with your existing legacy systems. Now it turns out that’s not the case. You’re setting up conference calls with your IT department and your vendor trying to fix the integration issue as soon as possible. It’s turning into one massive API headache you could frankly do without.

  • Something in the process just changed. One of the legacy systems had a minor update and consequently the tasks you intended to automate broke. Now your RPA bots stopped working entirely. These “smart” robots are utterly dumbfounded by changes, and you find yourself needing to go back in and re-configure the business process again. Not ideal, but fixable. The issue is, who has time to go back and fix future issues every time there’s a change in the system?

  • Bot work overload. You planned your automation well, but now you notice one of your digital workers are not able to manage. You can’t seem to re-programme the process, so the work is evenly distributed. And you can’t just deploy another robot. You have to go back to your RPA provider and get one. Besides the additional expense that you didn’t plan, you have lost a few days of productivity.

6 RPA ‘Treats’ or Tips to build your automation journey

  • Simplify your technology footprint: Instead of purchasing various point solutions, one for capturing data, one built to manage robots and one to orchestrate the process, look for an integrated automation platform.

  • Unlock unstructured data: Find a data ingestion technology that not only captures some of your data, but all of it.

  • Leverage all your analogue information for your digital transformation journey – and provide better accuracy than with OCR.

  • Make sure its low code/no code: Search for an RPA platform that lets you build your bots. And building shouldn’t be limited to a vendor or IT, but any business user.

  • Make straight-through-processing % your measure of success: Advance beyond basic repetitive task, desktop and document automation

  • Shift your focus to integrated automation – and avoid RPA horror stories.
